Seared Yellowfin Tuna

This is a perfect meal for a hot summer day if you’re looking for something light and fresh. Yellowfin tuna can be eaten just raw as is, but it really becomes something very special when seared just right and paired with the right flavours.

We bought a couple of small tuna steaks from Fresh St. Farms as they have a really good selection of fresh seafood for a reasonable price. This is a really easy recipe and will take you less than 10 minutes to prepare.

  • 2 yellow fin tuna steaks
  • 2 tablespoons ponzu sauce for marinating
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon fish sauce
  • 1 lime
  • 1 tablespoon sweet soy
  • bunch of cilantro
  • 3 green onions
  • 1 red chilli
  • 30g raw peanuts
  • pinch of salt and pepper

wash tuna and place in a covered bowl with the ponzu sauce for as long as you like
heat a frying pan on high heat, drizzle in the oil mix
lightly sear both sides for about 1-1.5 min per side, until just a slight crust formed and golden brown
meanwhile, chop your chilli, cilantro, green onions and toss in a bowl with lime juice, fish sauce and salt
once the tuna is done, transfer to a plate to cool, then reuse the pan to fry your peanuts to golden and fragrant
slice the tuna into thin pieces, about 1/8″ slices, then lay on your plate
top with the greens and crush the fried peanuts to garnish
drizzle sweet soy around the plate
